Captivate shines during spectacular showcase performance!

05 Sep 2018

The Captivate Choir lead by David Russell from the Captivate team

Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta students had the opportunity to shine when the Captivate performing and creative arts program recently hosted its 10th Anniversary Showcase at Quaycentre, Sydney Olympic Park.

The show combined a spectacular musical ensemble of 165 students, backed up by the 1000-student primary choir and 190-student secondary choir singing songs such as One Dream, Come Back to the Sea, Keep your Lamps Trimmed and Burning and River Run Free.

This was complemented by a dance ensemble of 382 dancers who kept audiences enraptured. There was also a secondary drama ensemble of 90 students and a student ‘spoken word choir’ comprising 80 students from four primary schools.

One of the highlights of the performance was the use of puppetry and props to reflect the showcase’s storyline. The impact of the puppets was dramatic, guiding the audience through show’s theme of ‘creativity’: from the igniting of the creative spark, through to creative play, creative block, creative flow, and finally creative genius. The show’s finale was a stunning performance of Rihanna’s Diamonds in the Sky.

Captivate director Mark Hopkins said that for many students involved, it was their first major public performance.

“Others were consolidating many years of practice, rehearsal and performing, honing their skills for HSC practical examinations in the coming weeks or auditions for specialist post school arts study pathways in the coming months.

“Captivate is the program by which all students, regardless of prior experience or the location of their school, can access specialist learning in the arts.

“With a constant stream of research documenting evidence of the cognitive and social benefits of arts participation and learning, it is vital that such learning is part of each child’s education.”

St Andrew’s Primary, Marayong acting Principal Kim McDonald described the show as a rewarding experience for all those involved.

“Students have been rehearsing since February, both during recess and lunch breaks and also at formal off-site rehearsals with other students in the Diocese as well as during the school holidays,’’ Mrs McDonald said.

The grand finale

“This level of collaboration and creativity has provided opportunities for students to express themselves in a unique way. We are so proud of the students and thank them for their commitment, enthusiasm and persistence over such a long period of time.”

Year 12 Awards Ceremony – Class of 2025 On Wednesday, we celebrated a significant milestone for our Year 12 students as the 2025 Awards Ceremony marked the culmination of their school journey. This event recognised a wide range of academic, sporting, creative, and personal achievements, as well as the remarkable community spirit and dedication to learning shown by this cohort. We gathered to honour not only what they have accomplished, but who they have become. In her address, Ms Merryweather offered a powerful message of encouragement and reflection. She reminded students: “The language of the mind that you have learnt will bring you to be our next doctors, journalists, lawyers, builders, plumbers, artists and, hopefully, teachers. It is the language of the mind that will bring us a new generation of inventors, researchers and entrepreneurs so that our world can be a better place.” “You will take the language of the heart with you everywhere you go. The language of the heart is the opportunity for reflection on your words and deeds so that you can be the best version of yourselves each day.” We are incredibly proud of the dedication, resilience, and perseverance shown by the Class of 2025. As they approach their HSC examinations, we encourage them to maintain their focus and continue striving to achieve their personal best. Their efforts throughout the year have laid a strong foundation for success. During the ceremony, all Year 12 students were presented with their Certificate of Graduation, with individual awards presented in the following categories: Sporting Achievements Performing Arts and Debating College Values Leadership Awards Distinguished Awards We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all recipients and commend each member of the graduating class for their contributions to our school community. As Year 12 prepare to take their next steps beyond the College, we offer them this blessing: Our hope for you is a life filled with joy and laughter, where difficulties are few, and you greet each day with faith, confidence, courage, and hope. May God keep you in the palm of His hand always—for remember, He walks with you every step of the way.

Yesterday, Gilroy Catholic College said a final farewell to our 2025 Year 12 Students at a whole school assembly. During her address, Ms Merryweather shared a quote from TS Eliot “the end is where we start from”. She reflected that with every ending comes a new beginning and that this week marks the ending of their education at Gilroy and the start of the next chapter of their lives. Ms Merryweather also shared that “we are proud and privileged to have spent the last six years with you.” and “ you have worked to make the College community a better place. You have achieved the goal of every leader - to leave a community a little bit better than before. Your actions have echoed Mary Mackillop: We must teach more by example than by words. Mrs Perry and Mr Gribble, both in their capacity as Leaders of Learning also praised the Year 12 students for their compassion and kindness and their hard work. The Gilroy Catholic College community wishes you the very best of luck in your next stage of life’s journey and with your upcoming HSC Examinations. Thank you to our Year 10 students Dom, James and Will for their assistance with the photography! #year12success #Graduation2025

On Tuesday, 15 Gilroy Catholic College Year 9 student leaders attended the Lifted GO event, focused on the theme: “Serving Homeless People with Mental Ill-Health.” It was an inspiring and thought-provoking day where students were challenged by the call of Jesus to serve others with compassion and humility. Throughout the event, students explored the importance of noticing, knowing, and serving as expressions of love in action. They engaged in meaningful discussions about practical ways to support those in need, especially individuals experiencing homelessness and mental ill-health. Bishop Vincent spoke passionately about the significance of building relationships with those on the margins, reminding students that authentic service begins with connection. Mark Smith, Acting CEO, also shared valuable insights into how students can serve others in their everyday lives and highlighted the formative power of service experiences in shaping character and deepening empathy. Our Year 9 leaders returned inspired, motivated, and ready to make a difference in their communities.

Farewell to Year 12 – A Week of Fun, Friendship & Final Memories As we approach the final farewell for our Year 12 students, Week 9 was dedicated to celebrating their time at Gilroy and giving them a chance to enjoy these last special days together. Throughout the week, students took part in a variety of recess activities — from lively volleyball matches to a fun lolly guessing competition. Whether they were playing games, snapping those final group photos, or simply enjoying chats with friends, the atmosphere was one of joy and connection. It truly was a week to remember! A highlight was “Anything But a Bag” Day, where students were challenged to bring anything that could function as a bag — and they did not disappoint! The creativity on display was quite impressive! Following that, today’s “Jazz Up Your Uniform” Day gave students the chance to show off their flair and originality once again. Using every bit of “haberdashery” know-how, they transformed their uniforms into vibrant, eye-catching ensembles. The result? A schoolyard full of colour, laughter, and spirit. This final celebration week was enjoyed by both students and staff, with a real sense of excitement and anticipation filling the College. We hope Year 12 students walk away with lasting memories of their final days at Gilroy, and now turn their focus towards the upcoming HSC Examinations. On behalf of the entire College community, we wish you all the very best in the journey ahead. Go confidently and with courage — you’ve got this!
