There are global leaders in the making at Gilroy Catholic College in Castle Hill with a number of students receiving early offers to commence their undergraduate degrees at Macquarie University in 2019.

Macquarie University’s award-winning Global Leadership program provides early offers for students who have made an active and significant contribution to society at large, as well as those who have shown initiative and commitment throughout their studies.

Liam Maher from Year 12 was among the students who applied for the program, receiving an offer to study a Bachelor of Business Administration with a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours). He described the offer as humbling and rewarding, and while he has secured an option for tertiary study, he noted he still “plans on making the most of the HSC and aiming for a high ATAR.”

"It is humbling to have received an early offer and to know I have secured an option for tertiary study, but also that my work as a part of the College’s various social justice initiatives has paid off.”

“Gilroy has always encouraged me to help others and to extend myself where possible, and I’m glad that this advice has been so beneficial for my post-school options,” he said.

A total of thirteen students have received early-entry offers from the university to study courses from psychology through to engineering.

Student Course accepted to
Liam Maher Bachelor of Business Administration with a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours)
Benjamin Zadro Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Majoring in Software Engineering
Yehan Peiris  Bachelor of Commerce, Professional Accounting with a Bachelor of Business Analytics
Yali Peiris Bachelor of Engineering and Commerce with a Bachelor of Applied Finance and Commerce (Professional Accounting)
Jonathan Derwin Bachelor of Business Administration
Flynn Hume Bachelor of Advanced Science
Justin Yu Bachelor of Advanced Science
Jarryd Browne Bachelor of Business Administration
Genevieve Lee  Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) with a Bachelor of Law
Alexandra Mercouris
Luke Meredith
Nicholas Collyer
Sina Aghamofid

Students accepted into the Global Leadership Program at Macquarie University also have the opportunity to participate in special events which focus on leadership and making positive contributions to society while tackling global challenges.

Acting Principal Jaie Skinner said the College is extremely proud of these hard-working students, and is absolutely thrilled for the students themselves and their families. “Having such a large number of Gilroy students accepted into the Global Leadership Program at Macquarie University is a sign of the talents, values and dedication to the betterment of our broader community all Gilroy graduates posses. We cannot wait to see what their very bright futures hold.”

Those who successfully complete their undergraduate degrees through the Global Leadership Program also receive a reference letter and a notation on their academic transcript, providing a competitive edge in the global employment market.

This is an amazing achievement which recognises the academic, leadership and social justice efforts of students throughout their schooling journey and we wish all of these students the best of luck with their tertiary studies.

This week our music teachers and CAPA LOL, took 49 Gilroy Catholic College students to Parramatta to “busk for Vinnies”. The music was great because of the hard work and dedication of our students and music teachers. When not performing, our students spent time walking around enthusiastically with donation buckets in the square! $1827 was raised for Vinnies - such a great achievement! Thank you to our teachers, musicians and roadies for your enthusiasm and dedication and congratulations on raising a fantastic amount of money! Below is a message of thanks from Vinnies: Congratulations and thanks to you all, and especially to your wonderful Gilroy musicians, for a truly impressive and joyous performance in Parramatta Centenary Square today! On the day, a total of $1,827 was raised by your students - an excellent result indeed! The normally low key, businesslike atmosphere was certainly brought to life today by the Gilroy Vibe you created! Would you please pass this information on to your impressive young students, who not only produced beautiful music but worked hard collecting donations. I'm sure you and your students know that the polished entertainment they produced is really appreciated by Vinnies. And of course, it is especially appreciated by our less fortunate sisters and brothers who often don't have in their lives what most of us have in abundance – good health, personal safety, a warm bed and the unconditional love and support of family and friends. Thanks again for your amazing support! We’d love to see you again next year! #stvincentdepaul #buskingforvinnies #cspd

Recently, a small group of selected Gilroy Catholic College Year 7 and Year 8 students participated in a special Vinnies Sleepout event, led by our Year 11 and 12 Student Leaders. As well as a fundraising effort, this was an opportunity for our students to show empathy, raise awareness, and turn our College values into action. This experience provided a unique insight into the complex issues that people experiencing homelessness face, by “sleeping rough” for one night. As a whole school community we raised over $6500 for this worthy cause.

Last Friday, staff and students at Gilroy Catholic College embraced a day of comfort and solidarity by wearing mufti with a purple item, showing their support for Bullying No Way Week (11–15 August). Throughout the week, students participated in pastoral lessons and discussions focused on recognising and celebrating individuality, embracing differences, and standing united against unkindness. The week’s activities culminated in a warm and vibrant atmosphere as student leaders greeted everyone at the gates with sweets and smiles. Fun volleyball games during recess and lunch, along with a purple-themed lolly jar guessing competition, added to the spirit of camaraderie, friendship, and mutual support that filled the College. Bullying No Way Week serves as a powerful reminder to speak up and foster a safe environment where every individual feels supported, respected, and valued. Our collective voices contribute to a positive school culture where kindness prevails. Coinciding with this week’s events, Friday also marked the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a significant day in the Catholic calendar honouring the belief that Mary was taken body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. While we were unable to celebrate Mass due to Year 12 Trials, each junior year group came together for a brief reflection service. During this time, students explored the importance of the feast and prayed a decade of the Rosary, deepening their connection to their faith.

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a day where Catholics honour the Mother of Jesus and celebrate the belief that at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. Pope Francis encouraged us to “be bold enough to discover new signs and new symbols, new flesh to embody and communicate the word” so I invite you to use the recontextualising image of artist Uğur Gallenkuş titled “Rohingya Mother and Child” that depicts refugees from Myanmar to Bangladesh melding into a gold-leafed icon of Mary to help you renew, refresh and re-translate the faith into your modern day context. The association with traditional religious imagery underscores the sacred worth of human beings, who bear God’s image, as well as proclaims the presence of Christ with those who suffer. Mary, Joseph and Jesus were also refugees who faced the hardships many of our brothers and sisters face around the world today as they are forcibly or out of necessity removed from their homes. This is also something members and relatives of our Gilroy Catholic Community may have had to face. On this Feast of the Assumption may we be inspired by Mary to turn to God in prayer and open our hearts to those in need, especially, mothers, children and families facing hardship. May we not turn away from those in need, regardless of the reason for that need. #assumptionoftheblessedvirginmary #cspd
