Annual CCD Mass 2018

26 Sep 2018

2018 CCD Mass 1

Each year hundreds of Special Religious Education teachers (SREs/catechists) gather for the Annual Diocesan Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) Mass and Awards Ceremony.

This year Good Shepherd Parish Plumpton hosted the Mass on Friday September 7.

It was a great celebration of this ministry when over 400 SREs from across the Diocese joined the 300 student SREs from Catholic schools to give thanks for the many blessings received, and to pray for our students in public schools and their families.

2018 CCD Mass 2

Bishop Vincent in his homily, offered words of encouragement and hope when he said, “This Eucharist is a thanksgiving to God for your active, faithful and generous discipleship. As Confraternity of Christian Doctrine volunteers, you bring the new wine of God’s love and mercy to the hearts of the young people.”

Bishop Vincent went on to say that, “At this time when the Church’s reputation, moral credibility and trust capital are effectively shattered in the wake of the sexual abuse crisis… we join forces with Pope Francis in repairing and restoring the Body of Christ. Now is the time for us to rebuild the Church as a beacon of hope for the world by living the radical vision of love, justice, compassion and solidarity.”

2018 CCD Mass 3

After the conclusion of Mass, the congregation remained seated while Bishop Vincent presented service awards and certificates.

Strengthening Connections & Celebrating Diversity To conclude this year’s Interfaith Encounters program, students from Year 10 and Year 11 gathered at Benedict’s Catholic College in Oran Park for our final session. The day served as an inspiring opportunity to reflect on our shared experiences, celebrate our diverse cultural and religious traditions, and engage in meaningful discussions around social justice. We were proud to join together alongside our host, St Benedict’s Catholic College, as well as the Australian Islamic Community School, Unity Grammar, Malek Fahd Islamic School, and St Patrick’s Marist College to collaborate and foster lasting connections across our school communities. We extend our sincere gratitude to Catholic Mission, in partnership with Together for Humanity, for facilitating such a valuable and impactful program throughout the year. We look forward to participating in the program again next year! #GilroyCatholicCollege #InterfaithDialogue #TogetherForHumanity #CatholicMission #SocialJustice #BuildingBridges #Community #Inclusion

Our Gilroy Cyber & Coding Team has had a fantastic term competing in the Australian Schools Cyber Challenge (ASCC), a national competition that introduces secondary students to real-world cybersecurity through a series of hands-on challenges and problem-solving activities. The competition is designed to develop technical knowledge while building valuable skills in teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. Our students have successfully completed Rounds 1 and 2 and are now eagerly awaiting the results to see whether they will progress to the Semi-Finals. Throughout the competition, they have embraced some incredibly challenging cybersecurity concepts, worked collaboratively to solve complex problems, and demonstrated outstanding perseverance and teamwork. We are extremely proud of their commitment and the way they have represented Gilroy. Our Cyber & Coding Team will take a short break over the holidays before shifting our focus to coding projects in Term 3. If you're interested in cybersecurity, game-based coding, or information technology in general, we'd love to have you join us! We meet every Monday at recess in the Library and you can see Mrs Cowper for more information. #ASCC #cyperpathways

It was wonderful to welcome back two Gilroy alumni last term for our SEDA Lunch and Learn presentation! Jacob (Sydney FC program) and Lachie (Penrith Panthers program), who are currently completing their SEDA studies, returned to share their experiences and provide valuable insights into the opportunities the program offers our students. It was fantastic to see how much they have grown since graduating and to hear about the passion they've discovered in their post-school journey. We're incredibly proud of all they have achieved and thank them for taking the time to inspire our current students. A big thank you also to the SEDA team for visiting Gilroy and presenting on the day. If your family would like to learn more about SEDA, information sessions are being held throughout the holiday break. Visit https://seda.edu.au/programs/your-studies/information-sessions/ to find out more. #SEDA #pathwaysinaction

Our students had a fantastic day attending this year's The Big Day In, presented by the ACS Foundation and hosted by Western Sydney University, Parramatta City Campus. The event gave students the opportunity to explore the many career pathways that utilise technology, computer science, and digital skills across a wide range of industries. Throughout the day, they heard from industry professionals who shared their career journeys, emerging technologies, and the exciting opportunities available in STEM and cybersecurity. Students attended engaging presentations from organisations including the Australian Defence Force, Australian Federal Police, Google, Microsoft, Westpac, Woolworths Group, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and WiseTech Global. Topics ranged from software engineering and artificial intelligence to cybersecurity, ethical hacking, cloud technologies, and future careers in technology. It was an inspiring day that highlighted the many ways technology is shaping our world and the diverse career opportunities available to our students. #bigdayin #pathwaysinaction

What's It Really Like to Send Your Kid to a Catholic School?

If you've ever assumed that attending a Catholic school means you have to be Catholic and that the fees are expensive, you're not alone. It's a common perception, but for many families, the reality looks quite different.

Last term, during a Wellbeing lesson, our Year 10 students aspiring to become Student Leaders for 2027/2028 proudly presented their speeches to their cohort. Each candidate spoke with confidence, enthusiasm and genuine pride, sharing their ideas and vision for how they can support and represent their peers as future leaders. Following the presentations, both the Year 10 cohort and staff voted separately on the candidates. Students who place in the top eight of either the student vote or the staff vote will progress to the interview stage. Congratulations to all students who put themselves forward. It takes courage to stand before your peers, and every candidate should be proud of the passion and commitment they demonstrated. We wish them all the very best in the next stage of the selection process.
