Gilroy Catholic College: Plans for massive revamp at Castle Hill secondary school

02 Mar 2022

Gilroy Catholic College Castle Hill
How the proposed developments would look from a western viewpoint

Gilroy Catholic College Castle Hill is one step closer to achieving a massive revamp after documents were recently lodged with The Hills Shire Council.

Development plans, valued at just over $20 million, have been submitted for the demolition of existing buildings and construction of new facilities at Gilroy Catholic College.

This school is bounded by Marie St and Excelsior Ave, Castle Hill.

The site is currently shared with St Gabriel’s School, a separate primary school for children with special needs.

According to the developer’s plans, this plot of land was purchased almost 100 years ago by the Catholic Church with the intention of establishing a school for deaf children.

It is primarily surrounded by low-density suburban homes, located about 1.5 km from Castle Towers.

The proposed development is limited to 5731 sqm on the western end of the college’s campus.

The proposal is for the demolition of two buildings and a shed to make way for a two-storey specialist building (’Block D’) and covered outdoor learning area (COLA).

According to the developer’s plans, Block D would be “a purpose-built research and creative (STEM) learning facility with specialist science, technology, home economics, visual arts and sports science facilities”.

Along with specialist STEM classrooms, Block D would also contain a canteen, common area and storage space.

Planning documents also propose the construction of a new COLA, the resurfacing of two existing sports courts and an internal courtyard with artificial turf.

According to the developer’s plans, this courtyard would “provide a private, high-quality recreation and learning space”.

Seven new trees and more than 800 shrubs would also be planted throughout the college’s grounds.

There would also be no changes to the school’s student and staff population.

Planning documents state “(this development would) provide for a more comfortable and sustainable site.”

“(The proposal) will ensure the use of the site as an educational establishment is enhanced and safeguarded for the long-term … (meeting) the education demands of Hills residents.”

Gilroy Catholic College was approached for comment.

This development application has been submitted to The Hills Shire Council. It will be determined by the Sydney Central City Planning Panel in the coming months.

Recently, our Year 7 & 8 Girls Basketball Team competed at the NSWCCC Championships at Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre. The team put in an incredible effort, winning 2 of their 5 pool games and narrowly missing a semi-final spot after a tough 3-point loss to an undefeated St Patrick’s College. The girls showed amazing teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. We’re so proud of the way they represented Gilroy! A big thank you to Mrs Kaur, Miss Victor and Mr Garland for assisting with the managing and coaching of the team. #NSWCCC #gilroysuccess

This morning the Gilroy Catholic College school community gathered to commemorate Remembrance Day. During the Liturgy, lead by our College Leaders, Ms Merryweather shared a story about her great-uncle — a man who served bravely all over the world during the war. Just before the end of the conflict, he was tragically killed in action. She reflected that today is a day to honour all those who have died in wars past and present — the men and women who gave their lives so that we might live in freedom, and have the ability to make our own choices today. As we paused in silence, we remembered their courage, their sacrifice, and the peace they fought to preserve. #lestweforget #remembranceday

Recently, Gilroy Catholic College students completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Qualifying Adventurous Journey. Over four days they kayaked and hiked through the Myall Lakes National Park. During the journey , the students had the opportunity to develop skills to help them grow as individuals, and as a team. Carrying all of their gear and supplies for the trip, the students had to be extremely savvy in packing their kayaks to ensure everything would fit. Well done to these students for their commitment!

An Unforgettable Day at Warragamba Dam! Our Year 9 and 10 students had the incredible opportunity to visit Warragamba Dam and learn firsthand about the vital work WaterNSW does in managing our state’s water catchments. Through interactive, hands-on activities, students stepped into the roles of data scientists and maintenance officers, exploring how temperature, turbidity, and pH levels all play a crucial part in ensuring the quality of our water supply. They also discovered the wide range of career pathways within WaterNSW, from unskilled and entry-level positions to specialist and graduate roles. The highlight of the day? A behind-the-scenes tour of the dam - an exclusive experience not open to the public - where students gained insight into the people, skills, and knowledge that keep this essential infrastructure running. It was an inspiring and eye-opening day that showcased just how many exciting opportunities exist in the water and environmental sectors! Thank you to the team at WaterNSW for allowing us to come visit! #STEMEducation #FutureCareers #WaterNSW #EnvironmentalScience #HandsOnLearning #CareerPathways #RealWorldSTEM

2026 Gilroy Catholic College Student Leadership Retreat Last week, the 2026 Gilroy Catholic College student leaders attended their Leadership Retreat at the Mt Carmel Retreat Centre. This retreat provided a valuable opportunity for students to grow, reflect, and prepare for the year ahead in their leadership journey. Throughout the program, students engaged in activities designed to enhance their leadership skills, strengthen teamwork, and explore practical strategies for effective and compassionate leadership. The experience encouraged deep reflection on the responsibilities of leadership and the positive influence that comes with their role within our College community. We commend our student leaders for their commitment, enthusiasm, and willingness to serve others. We look forward to the many ways they will contribute to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and faith-filled environment at Gilroy Catholic College in the year ahead. #GilroyFramework #LeadershipInAction #StudentLeaders #LeadershipRetreat

Gilroy Catholic College Students Give Back at Foodbank Last week, a group of Year 10 students from Gilroy Catholic College took part in a volunteer mission day at Foodbank, as part of the Mary MacKillop Service Awards Program. Together, our students helped create 780 Christmas Hampers, providing over 18,000 meals to families in need this Christmas season. The experience was both humbling and rewarding, as the students reflected: “Across the day we made 780 hampers and gave 18,000 meals to families, helping them struggle a little bit less this Christmas time. This experience was incredibly rewarding as we could see just how much our effort was doing to help those less fortunate.” Following the visit, Foodbank shared their appreciation in a heartfelt message: “Thanks to your hard work, you helped pack 780 Christmas Hampers, moving an amazing 10,140kg of food—enough to create approximately 18,252 meals for individuals and families doing it tough across our communities. Every box you packed, every item you sorted, and every kilo you lifted plays a part in putting food on the table for someone in need. Whether it’s a parent trying to make ends meet, a senior living alone or a child going to school with a full lunchbox—YOU are making that possible!” Congratulations to our amazing students on their dedication, teamwork, and generosity in supporting those less fortunate. You have truly embodied the spirit of Mary MacKillop’s call to “never see a need without doing something about it.”
