Gilroy Catholic College: Plans for massive revamp at Castle Hill secondary school

02 Mar 2022

How the proposed developments would look from a western viewpoint

Gilroy Catholic College Castle Hill is one step closer to achieving a massive revamp after documents were recently lodged with The Hills Shire Council.

Development plans, valued at just over $20 million, have been submitted for the demolition of existing buildings and construction of new facilities at Gilroy Catholic College.

This school is bounded by Marie St and Excelsior Ave, Castle Hill.

The site is currently shared with St Gabriel’s School, a separate primary school for children with special needs.

According to the developer’s plans, this plot of land was purchased almost 100 years ago by the Catholic Church with the intention of establishing a school for deaf children.

It is primarily surrounded by low-density suburban homes, located about 1.5 km from Castle Towers.

The proposed development is limited to 5731 sqm on the western end of the college’s campus.

The proposal is for the demolition of two buildings and a shed to make way for a two-storey specialist building (’Block D’) and covered outdoor learning area (COLA).

According to the developer’s plans, Block D would be “a purpose-built research and creative (STEM) learning facility with specialist science, technology, home economics, visual arts and sports science facilities”.

Along with specialist STEM classrooms, Block D would also contain a canteen, common area and storage space.

Planning documents also propose the construction of a new COLA, the resurfacing of two existing sports courts and an internal courtyard with artificial turf.

According to the developer’s plans, this courtyard would “provide a private, high-quality recreation and learning space”.

Seven new trees and more than 800 shrubs would also be planted throughout the college’s grounds.

There would also be no changes to the school’s student and staff population.

Planning documents state “(this development would) provide for a more comfortable and sustainable site.”

“(The proposal) will ensure the use of the site as an educational establishment is enhanced and safeguarded for the long-term … (meeting) the education demands of Hills residents.”

Gilroy Catholic College was approached for comment.

This development application has been submitted to The Hills Shire Council. It will be determined by the Sydney Central City Planning Panel in the coming months.

Last week, Gilroy Catholic College students took their musical talents to Parramatta to Busk for Vinnies, filling the square with music while supporting a wonderful cause. Our students delivered fantastic performances, reflecting the hard work, commitment and dedication of both our talented musicians and their music teachers. When they weren’t performing, students enthusiastically took to the square with donation buckets, encouraging the community to support Vinnies. Together, they raised an incredible $1520 to help those in our community who are in need. A huge thank you to our teachers, musicians and roadies for the energy, enthusiasm and dedication they brought to the day. We are incredibly proud of the way our students shared their talents in service of others. Below is a message of thanks from Vinnies: “Congratulations to you all, and especially to your wonderful musicians, for their professional, joyful performances in Parramatta Centenary Square today! The normally low key, business atmosphere in Centenary Square was very much brought alive by the special Gilroy Vibe they created. Fortunately, the weather conditions were perfect, and a total of $1,520 was raised - a terrific result indeed! Would you please pass this information on to your impressive young students, who not only produced beautiful music but were more than happy to help collecting donations. Also worth mentioning is your students’ all-round mature, friendly, respectful demeanour, which was favourably commented upon by a number of passers-by. An inspiring cohort of young Gilroy men and women! We would like to particularly mention the patience and resilience of teachers and students this year, who successfully navigated Council’s strict rules re music sound levels. I'm sure you and your students know that the polished entertainment they produced today is really appreciated by Vinnies. And of course, it is especially appreciated by our less fortunate sisters and brothers who often don't have in their lives what most of us have in abundance – good health, personal safety, a warm bed and the unconditional love and support of family and friends. Thanks again for your amazing support!

On Wednesday, 12 August, our Year 10 students attended the bStreetSmart excursion at Afterpay Arena. The day provided students with a powerful and engaging insight into road safety and the consequences of road trauma. Students heard from guest speakers, experienced interactive displays and scenarios, and had the opportunity to learn from real-life stories and experiences. A valuable day that encouraged students to make safer choices on and around the road.

We would like to give a huge shoutout to our Under 14s Boys Rugby League team for a fantastic season in the PDSSSC competition! The team went undefeated throughout their pool games, showing great determination, teamwork and commitment each week. Unfortunately, their season came to an end with a narrow loss in the semi-final. We would like to commend every player for their dedication to the College, as well as the sportsmanship and positive attitude they displayed throughout the competition. We are incredibly proud of the team’s efforts! A special thank you to Mr Watson for coaching the team and supporting the boys throughout the season. Well done, boys!

An amazing accomplishment! Congratulations to Year 12 student Anmol, who is now a published author! Written between the ages of 16 and 18, The Hope in Life is an inspiring self-help book exploring coming of age, resilience and self-discovery. Anmol shares how living with cerebral palsy has shaped his outlook and strengthened his message of hope, gratitude, perseverance and kindness. Demonstrating his generosity and compassion, Anmol plans to donate a portion of the book’s profits to Cerebral Palsy Alliance to support people living with cerebral palsy. We congratulate Anmol on this remarkable achievement and wish him every success as his writing journey continues! #CSPD #aspiringauthors #gilroyvalues
