Talent and passion intersect for drama students

22 Aug 2023

CAPTIVATE drama students from Catholic schools in the Diocese of Parramatta

Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) students in the CAPTIVATE Drama program shone brightly again at the annual Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) 2023 Intersection Festival earlier this month.

CAPTIVATE is the creative and performing arts program for students from Catholic schools across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains.

Rhys Taylor, Mateo Soriano, Dominic Lim, Jean-Luc Buot de l’Epine (Parramatta Marist High School), Mia Brownlow (Catherine McAuley Westmead), Ella Montgomery-Wynn (Gilroy Catholic College Castle Hill) and Fadi Alomar (St Pauls Catholic College Greystanes) performed the final play of the evening, the World Premier of Michelle Gould’s “Drag’na Dhuul”, in front of a cheering capacity audience at the Rebel Theatre.

Talent and passion intersect for CAPTIVATE drama students from Catholic schools in the Diocese of Parramatta

Each year, the Intersection Festival brings together schools and youth arts organisations from across Sydney to perform the 10 winning scripts of the 2022 National Writers Studio. Emerging young writers submit their short plays for assessment and work closely over months with professional mentors, with their final drafts performed for a live audience at this special event.

CAPTIVATE teachers Lucinda Armour and Tim Martin have the privilege of being on the finalist script selection panel.

Senior members of the CAPTIVATE After School Drama Ensemble rehearsed two of the finalist scripts over a series of weeks, submitting these dynamic performances for consideration. Each participating arts organisation has one performance chosen for the festival and CAPTIVATE’s was “Drag’na Dhuul” - a big night of Dungeons and Dragons where the battle is played out in more ways than one!

Each year our talented actors grow and shine on The Rebel Theatre stage and we are unspeakably proud of them.

“Our students love the characters, themes and situations these young writers create, and the unique perspective it brings to their own dramatic performances,” Tim said.

“It is a wonderful opportunity to see the words and voice of a generation in action. Each year our talented actors grow and shine on The Rebel Theatre stage and we are unspeakably proud of them.”

Joining the cast on the night were CAPTIVATE students Aneisa Kalra, Madeline Toth (Catherine McAuley Westmead) and Aleksander Waesch (St Patrick’s Marist College Dundas) who acted as MCs for the event. They all did a fantastic job, especially with a range of last-minute changes which included picking up chicken feathers and welcoming all the winning writers onto the stage at the finale, presenting them with a published copy of their scripts.

“The Intersection Festival is yet another great opportunity for our students to experience all the ATYP has to offer and work with students, writers and artists in this amazing theatre - right in the shadow of the Harbour Bridge,” Lucinda said.

“We very much look forward to the 2024 Festival!”

On Monday 22 June, Gilroy Catholic College Year 9 and 10 Japanese students enjoyed a fantastic Japanese culture excursion to Sydney, bringing their classroom learning to life through authentic experiences. The day began with a visit to an art gallery, where students explored a range of fascinating artworks before enjoying a delicious Japanese lunch at Ichibanboshi. They then visited Kinokuniya Bookstore, browsing Japanese books, manga and merchandise, before finishing the day at Genki Mart, where they discovered a variety of Japanese snacks and products. The excursion provided students with a wonderful opportunity to experience aspects of Japanese culture firsthand, while creating lasting memories with their classmates. It was a fun, engaging and rewarding day, and we are incredibly proud of the way our students represented the College throughout the excursion.

Congratulations to Gilroy Catholic College Year 12 student Caitlyn, who recently represented NSWCCC at the All Schools Netball Championships. Caitlyn and her team delivered an outstanding performance, finishing as runners-up in the competition. Adding to this achievement, Caitlyn was selected in the NSW All Schools Merit Team. While there is no Australian All Schools Championship for the Opens division, selection in this merit team is a significant honour and a wonderful recognition of Caitlyn’s talent, dedication and hard work. Well done, Caitlyn, on this fantastic achievement! #NSWCCC #allschoolschampionships

On Tuesday 16 June, Gilroy Catholic College students visited Australian Islamic College Australia for the next stage of our Interfaith Encounter. Students reconnected with the same group they had previously welcomed to our school, continuing to build friendship, dialogue and mutual understanding. Together, they explored how our faith traditions call us to reconciliation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through shared conversation, students reflected on the importance of recognising the history of the First Peoples of this land and responding with respect, truth and hope. Thank you to Australian Islamic College Australia for their warm hospitality and for continuing this important journey with us. #interfaithdialogue #gilroyvalues #faithinaction #cspd

Year 10 Food Technology students have been studying the Food Service and Catering unit, gaining valuable insight into the skills and teamwork required in a restaurant environment. As part of their learning, students planned, prepared and served a delicious three-course lunch for a group of teachers. Each class created an entrée, main course and dessert, along with a vegetarian option, showcasing their creativity, organisation and culinary skills. We were incredibly impressed not only by the quality and presentation of the food, but also by the professionalism with which students operated their restaurant. From the kitchen to table service, they worked together to create a smooth and enjoyable dining experience for their guests. Congratulations to all students on their outstanding effort and achievement!

Creativity with a purpose! During a recent sewing lesson, Gilroy Catholic College students put their skills to work by handmaking toys for children in hospital. Each toy was carefully crafted with kindness and care, with the hope of bringing comfort, joy, and a smile to a child who may be going through a difficult time. We are proud to see our students using their learning to make a positive difference in the community while developing valuable sewing skills! #CSPD #sewingforacause

Our Year 12 Health and Movement Science students recently participated in an engaging and interactive learning experience at the Australian College of Physical Education (ACPE). Throughout the day, students explored the science behind human movement, analysing technique, motion, and performance through a range of practical biomechanics activities. They investigated how biomechanical principles can be applied to improve movement efficiency and sporting performance. In the afternoon, students examined key concepts in sports medicine, working through real-world scenarios and interactive case studies focused on the prevention and management of sporting injuries. This valuable excursion provided students with hands-on experiences that strengthened their understanding of course content and highlighted the practical applications of Health and Movement Science.
