More than 60 secondary students from Catholic Schools Diocese of Parramatta (CSPD), gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes, Seven Hills in October for the annual Social Justice Statement launch for students.
Each year the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ACBC) issues a major Social Justice Statement reflecting on the current, social, economic and ecological challenges. The 2023-2024 statement is titled: Listen, Learn, Love: A New Engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Held in partnership with the Diocese of Parramatta’s Mission Enhancement Team (MET) – Peace, Justice, Ecology Team, the launch was attended by Year 9 students with guest speakers including Bishop Vincent Long and Executive Director of Schools Jack De Groot.
The aim of the launch was for students to gain a better understanding of what the social justice statement is and to work together to consider how they can take action in their schools.
Released in August 2023, the statement reads:
At the heart of this year’s Social Justice Statement is a call for all the People of God to embrace a new engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, an engagement which involves a commitment to listen to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers and to learn from them. This listening and learning and the actions which flow from them must be grounded in a spirit of love if there is to be a change for the better.
“This statement is very different from those in the past. Much of the preparation was spent listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in major cities and regional areas. From Canberra to the Kimberleys, Sydney to Wadeye in the NT, and Melbourne to Cherbourg in Queensland,” Bishop Long said at the official launch in August.
“One of the objectives of this statement is that we want Catholics to understand that Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic social action are not simply theoretical and academic exercises. We hear what God is saying to us about justice by being with our sisters and brothers on the peripheries of society.”
At the student event, Executive Director of Schools Jack de Groot spoke about reconciliation and encouraged students to feel empowered by their opportunity to create change.
“I think back to my experience of being a fifteen-year-old and the thing that mattered to me about Catholicism and Christianity was about doing something practical in the world and that has continued throughout my life because faith is about action,” said Jack.
“Our school communities are led by students who want a just society, who want to make firm amend, not to be stuck in saying ‘sorry’ but understanding it so that we move to action,” he said. “Social Justice statements are about the Australia we will create and it is about you being empowered to create it.”
In reflecting on her experience of the day Catherine McAuley Westmead student Aaliyah Johnston, said she felt strengthened in her resolve to see change.
“We spoke about empowering the voice of all people no matter their race or beliefs,” she said. “I connected with the painful stories of Indigenous people which I heard at the launch and believe the Social Justice statement to Listen, Learn, Love can create a more united and strong community where justice can be met and we can learn from our mistakes.”
Year 9 student Jake Meredith from Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek added that listening and sharing resonated with him.
“The day was a great day to learn about what we can do better to help,” he said. “It is a really good opportunity to hear others' opinions and listen to their stories.”
For St Clare’s Catholic High School Hassall Grove student Reuben, the message was simple, “We can make a change.”

On Tuesday 17 February the students and staff of Gilroy Catholic College were joined by the 2025 HSC high achieving graduates and their families. Ms Merryweather reflected on the true meaning of success, reminding us that one of the most important keys to achieving long-term goals is consistently committing to positive tasks and habits. Success is built over time through dedication, perseverance and steady effort. Mr Horan continued this message, quoting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: “Success isn't always about 'greatness,' it's about consistency. Consistent hard work gains success. Greatness will come.” He emphasised that daily, relentless effort is far more important than immediate or grand results, encouraging our students to focus on persistence and commitment in their own educational journeys. Following the assembly, our High Achievers, their families and staff gathered to celebrate over morning tea. It was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge not only academic excellence of these 2025 graduates, but also the dedication and resilience shown throughout their studies. We sincerely thank our High Achievers for their remarkable accomplishments and for their valuable contributions to the Q&A session with our current Year 12 students. The insights, experiences and encouragement shared will undoubtedly inspire the next cohort as they strive for their own success.

Yesterday, at a special assembly celebrating Gilroy Catholic College’s High Achievers, we proudly recognised the outstanding accomplishments of our 2025 Dux, Genevieve. Genevieve achieved an exceptional ATAR of 98.5 — a testament to her dedication, perseverance and commitment to excellence throughout her senior years. During the assembly, Genevieve generously shared her insights into success, encouraging students to stay organised, seek support when needed, and maintain balance while striving for their goals. Her humility and determination were evident, inspiring all in attendance. “What works for one person may not work for another — so take the time to discover your own approach. Surround yourself with a positive group of friends who hold you accountable, but who also make you laugh and remind you to enjoy the journey. Be creative with the way you study. Whether alone or with others, experiment with different methods and routines to build strong, sustainable habits. Remember, everyone’s journey is unique. Stay patient with yourself. Keep showing up. Keep striving for your own personal best. There will be distractions, and sometimes you’ll give in to them — that’s normal. What truly matters is your ability to refocus and return to the work that moves you closer to your goals. Success is not built on a single action. It’s the result of hard work, consistency, and discipline over time. Trust the process. The results will come.” Her advice to students is simple: "one day, you will look back on this chapter and feel proud of yourself. Show up for yourself — even on the days when it feels hard and motivation is low. Never underestimate the power of simply doing your best." We congratulate Genevieve on this remarkable achievement and wish her every success in her future endeavours.

Today we kicked off Wellbeing Week in the sweetest way possible, with Mr Whippy vans visiting the College during recess and lunch for students to purchase ice creams. Yesterday, Gilroy Catholic College students Carla, Ryan, Poppy, Renee and Daniel attended the CSPD Project Compassion Launch at St John XXIII Catholic College. They reflected on the day as follows: The day was an overall fun, informative, and interactive experience. We especially appreciated the questions about water availability and learning about Sisilia, whose life was transformed through Project Compassion. Having access to clean, safe drinking water instead of unsafe river water has made a significant difference in her daily life. Additionally, the prayers and stories shared were not only inspiring, but also helped us to deepen our faith and better understand the challenges faced by people around the world. We particularly valued Bishop Vincent’s account of his experiences at the refugee camp and his personal struggle with water security, which gave us greater insight into the realities many communities face. Wellbeing Week – Week 4 (16–20 February) During Week 4 of this term, from Monday 16 February to Friday 20 February, Gilroy Catholic College will celebrate Wellbeing Week. This special week provides an opportunity for our community to pause, recharge, and be reminded of the importance of mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing.
