Students empowered to create change at Social Justice Statement launch

27 Oct 2023

More than 60 secondary students from Catholic Schools Diocese of Parramatta (CSPD), gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes, Seven Hills in October for the annual Social Justice Statement launch for students.

Each year the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ACBC) issues a major Social Justice Statement reflecting on the current, social, economic and ecological challenges. The 2023-2024 statement is titled: Listen, Learn, Love: A New Engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Held in partnership with the Diocese of Parramatta’s Mission Enhancement Team (MET) – Peace, Justice, Ecology Team, the launch was attended by Year 9 students with guest speakers including Bishop Vincent Long and Executive Director of Schools Jack De Groot.

The aim of the launch was for students to gain a better understanding of what the social justice statement is and to work together to consider how they can take action in their schools.

Released in August 2023, the statement reads:

At the heart of this year’s Social Justice Statement is a call for all the People of God to embrace a new engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, an engagement which involves a commitment to listen to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers and to learn from them. This listening and learning and the actions which flow from them must be grounded in a spirit of love if there is to be a change for the better.

“This statement is very different from those in the past. Much of the preparation was spent listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in major cities and regional areas. From Canberra to the Kimberleys, Sydney to Wadeye in the NT, and Melbourne to Cherbourg in Queensland,” Bishop Long said at the official launch in August.

“One of the objectives of this statement is that we want Catholics to understand that Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic social action are not simply theoretical and academic exercises. We hear what God is saying to us about justice by being with our sisters and brothers on the peripheries of society.”

At the student event, Executive Director of Schools Jack de Groot spoke about reconciliation and encouraged students to feel empowered by their opportunity to create change.

“I think back to my experience of being a fifteen-year-old and the thing that mattered to me about Catholicism and Christianity was about doing something practical in the world and that has continued throughout my life because faith is about action,” said Jack.

“Our school communities are led by students who want a just society, who want to make firm amend, not to be stuck in saying ‘sorry’ but understanding it so that we move to action,” he said. “Social Justice statements are about the Australia we will create and it is about you being empowered to create it.”

In reflecting on her experience of the day Catherine McAuley Westmead student Aaliyah Johnston, said she felt strengthened in her resolve to see change.

“We spoke about empowering the voice of all people no matter their race or beliefs,” she said. “I connected with the painful stories of Indigenous people which I heard at the launch and believe the Social Justice statement to Listen, Learn, Love can create a more united and strong community where justice can be met and we can learn from our mistakes.”

Year 9 student Jake Meredith from Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek added that listening and sharing resonated with him.

“The day was a great day to learn about what we can do better to help,” he said. “It is a really good opportunity to hear others' opinions and listen to their stories.”

For St Clare’s Catholic High School Hassall Grove student Reuben, the message was simple, “We can make a change.”

Senior Boys Oztag Report From PDSSSC Oztag Champions, to NSW All Schools Oztag Sutherland Champions, and finally battling it out as quarter finalists at the NSW Secondary Schools Oztag Champions of Champions – We could not be prouder of this incredible team. This is a group of young men who have consistently stepped up to play against the very best in the state. Their skill, determination, teamwork, and brotherhood have been nothing short of inspiring. Our most recent tournament was particularly special, as it marked the last time many of our boys would pull on the Gilroy jersey. With several Year 12 students in the squad, this was the closing chapter of a journey we have travelled together for many years. Their leadership, passion, and commitment have left a lasting mark on this team and the college. The legacy these boys leave behind will be remembered – not just for their success on the field, but for the culture of mateship and resilience they built along the way. Congratulations, gentlemen. You have done yourselves and Gilroy proud. #PDSSSCOztag #NSWCCCOztag #AllSchoolsOztagSutherland #OztagChampionsofChampions #CSPD

Gilroy Catholic College Embraces RUOK? Day with Compassion and Connection Yesterday, Gilroy Catholic College wholeheartedly embraced RUOK? Day, with both staff and students actively participating in this vital mental health initiative. The campus was alive with meaningful conversations as the community united to promote well-being and encourage open, supportive dialogue. The day began with a comforting Milk and Milo station, bringing warmth and smiles to the morning. Our dedicated school leaders welcomed peers at the gates, offering friendly greetings and small tokens of support — including stickers, wristbands, and yellow ribbons — setting a positive tone for the day ahead. Throughout the day, interactive discussions unfolded across the playground, creating safe spaces for students to share, listen, and connect. These open conversations reminded everyone of the strength found in simply asking, “Are you OK?” Adding a light-hearted touch, a Lolly Jar Guessing competition sparked excitement and the yellow items/clothing worn by students and staff amplified the spirit of unity and the powerful message of RUOK? Day — that reaching out can truly make a difference. The event was a meaningful reminder of the impact of community, compassion, and genuine conversation. #RUOK?Day #mentalhealthsupport #CSPD

PDSSSC Chess Gala Day Recently 23 Gilroy Catholic College students competed in the PDSSSC Gala Day. represented our school exceptionally well, displaying courtesy, respect, and great sportsmanship throughout the event. It was particularly interesting to see our Year 10 and Year 9 teams face off against each other twice—an unexpected twist that they embraced with enthusiasm and good spirit! Our students also went above and beyond by helping with the setup and pack-up of equipment, which was greatly appreciated by the event organisers. While our teams didn’t place this year, they played very well and, most importantly, had a lot of fun! Well done also, to the following students who stepped out of their comfort zones on the day. Mitchell (Year 7) and Lucas (Year 8) Both boys agreed to play up in a Year 9 team—an impressive display of courage and adaptability. Sean (Year 10) Sean volunteered to play for the Year 11 team with very short notice the evening before—an outstanding effort! Well done to everyone involved!

Fathers’ Day Breakfast at Gilroy Catholic College This morning, we had the pleasure of celebrating our Gilroy fathers, grandfathers, and carers at our annual Fathers’ Day Breakfast. It was heartening to see so many of you join us, and the warmth of our community was felt throughout the gathering. Mrs Rodriguez warmly welcomed everyone, acknowledging the many roles fathers and carers play — from taxi driver to doctor, mentor, teacher, ATM, and coach. She reminded us that your presence is a testament to your dedication, and that your nurturing spirit is at the heart of what fatherhood truly means. “Your presence here,” she said, “is a reminder of your commitment to your children... and provides an opportunity for you to connect with each other.” Ms Merryweather also shared heartfelt reflections about her own father, highlighting the vital role fathers play in providing safety, support, laughter, and unconditional love in their children’s lives. We also took the opportunity to support Jersey Day, with fathers, students, and staff proudly wearing their favorite jerseys to raise awareness and show support for organ donation. A sincere thank you to everyone who attended, our dedicated staff and our Parent Council for their collaboration in bringing this event to life. We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to connect with fellow members of the Gilroy community — and, of course, the delicious food! Wishing all our fathers, grandfathers, and carers a very Happy Fathers’ Day! #happyfathersday #cspd
