More than 60 secondary students from Catholic Schools Diocese of Parramatta (CSPD), gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes, Seven Hills in October for the annual Social Justice Statement launch for students.
Each year the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (ACBC) issues a major Social Justice Statement reflecting on the current, social, economic and ecological challenges. The 2023-2024 statement is titled: Listen, Learn, Love: A New Engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Held in partnership with the Diocese of Parramatta’s Mission Enhancement Team (MET) – Peace, Justice, Ecology Team, the launch was attended by Year 9 students with guest speakers including Bishop Vincent Long and Executive Director of Schools Jack De Groot.
The aim of the launch was for students to gain a better understanding of what the social justice statement is and to work together to consider how they can take action in their schools.
Released in August 2023, the statement reads:
At the heart of this year’s Social Justice Statement is a call for all the People of God to embrace a new engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, an engagement which involves a commitment to listen to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sisters and brothers and to learn from them. This listening and learning and the actions which flow from them must be grounded in a spirit of love if there is to be a change for the better.
“This statement is very different from those in the past. Much of the preparation was spent listening to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in major cities and regional areas. From Canberra to the Kimberleys, Sydney to Wadeye in the NT, and Melbourne to Cherbourg in Queensland,” Bishop Long said at the official launch in August.
“One of the objectives of this statement is that we want Catholics to understand that Catholic Social Teaching and Catholic social action are not simply theoretical and academic exercises. We hear what God is saying to us about justice by being with our sisters and brothers on the peripheries of society.”
At the student event, Executive Director of Schools Jack de Groot spoke about reconciliation and encouraged students to feel empowered by their opportunity to create change.
“I think back to my experience of being a fifteen-year-old and the thing that mattered to me about Catholicism and Christianity was about doing something practical in the world and that has continued throughout my life because faith is about action,” said Jack.
“Our school communities are led by students who want a just society, who want to make firm amend, not to be stuck in saying ‘sorry’ but understanding it so that we move to action,” he said. “Social Justice statements are about the Australia we will create and it is about you being empowered to create it.”
In reflecting on her experience of the day Catherine McAuley Westmead student Aaliyah Johnston, said she felt strengthened in her resolve to see change.
“We spoke about empowering the voice of all people no matter their race or beliefs,” she said. “I connected with the painful stories of Indigenous people which I heard at the launch and believe the Social Justice statement to Listen, Learn, Love can create a more united and strong community where justice can be met and we can learn from our mistakes.”
Year 9 student Jake Meredith from Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek added that listening and sharing resonated with him.
“The day was a great day to learn about what we can do better to help,” he said. “It is a really good opportunity to hear others' opinions and listen to their stories.”
For St Clare’s Catholic High School Hassall Grove student Reuben, the message was simple, “We can make a change.”

Wellbeing Week – Week 4 (16–20 February) During Week 4 of this term, from Monday 16 February to Friday 20 February, Gilroy Catholic College will celebrate Wellbeing Week. This special week provides an opportunity for our community to pause, recharge, and be reminded of the importance of mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing. Last week, Years 7 and 8 had the pleasure of attending presentations by motivational speaker Daniel Merza. For Year 7 students, the focus was on setting expectations, building empathy, and understanding the different roles within bullying situations. The session aimed to empower students with practical strategies to respond with courage and kindness during this important transition year. The Year 8 presentation focused on student wellbeing, offering insights and strategies for managing stress, pressure, and overwhelming emotions. Students were supported to develop skills in emotional regulation, help-seeking, and resilience as academic and social demands continue to increase. Gilroy Catholic College Open Evening is scheduled for Wednesday 4 March 2026 from 4pm till 7pm. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in both self-guided and organised tours of the College. There is no need to pre-register. Please be aware that there may be a short wait depending on the demand for organised tours. The first tours will begin at 4pm and the final tour will end at 6:45pm. There will be a presentation from our College Principal, Cheryl Merryweather, at 5:30pm in the College Hall. As such, guided tours will stop at 5pm in preparation; they will recommence following the presentation. Parking and access to the College We ask that you enter the College through the Marie St Bus Bay gates. Ample street parking is available on surrounding streets and at Coolong Reserve. Enrolment To request an enrolment application please visit the College website. Once you have received the application this can be emailed or submitted via the College office. The College Office will be open until 6:30pm on the night to accept enrolments and payment. Our College office hours to receive applications are 8:30am to 3:30pm. The final date for receipt of enrolment applications to be considered for first round offers will be Friday 27 March. First round letters of offer will be sent during the week beginning 25 May 2026.

Welcome Year 7! Today we were delighted to welcome our new Year 7 students and their families to Gilroy Catholic College. There was plenty of excitement as students reunited with friends, made new connections and captured special moments together. After the excitement died down, Year 7 students joined their Wellbeing Groups and our College Leaders were on hand to help guide them! Families and staff then gathered for our Welcoming Mass, where. Ms Merryweather warmly welcomed the Year 7 families to Gilroy. She reflected that they are now part of our community, our family and as such we all stick together. As a family, we are here to help our students grow and learn, so at the end of this journey, they will be the best version of themselves and find their place in the world. Father Joe continued this sentiment during Mass, talking about our Catholic identity and how the core of our faith is the family and their love for each other. Following Mass, parents and carers enjoyed morning tea and the opportunity to connect with one another as their children begin this new chapter. Year 7, we are so glad you are here — we look forward to supporting you throughout an exciting year ahead!

At the end of Term 4 last year, Year 9 Religion students created a prayer wall in the shape of a dove, reflecting their final unit of study, “Is the right to fight for peace?” The students focused especially on praying for peace in Nigeria, with the wall holding their personal reflections and intentions. Students from other year levels, as well as staff, were also invited to contribute their own prayers and intentions. In the spirit of the second week of Advent and the lighting of the Candle of Peace, the prayer wall served as a powerful reminder of our shared hope for peace in our world and within our own communities—particularly for those who are most vulnerable.

Yesterday, Gilroy Catholic College staff gathered for a community Mass at St Michael’s Church in Baulkham Hills. Father Joe presided and reminded us that we had chosen a particularly fitting day to celebrate, as it was the feast day of St Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of teachers and students. In his homily, Father Joe reflected on our role as educators, reminding us that our responsibility extends beyond imparting knowledge. We are also called to impart wisdom — the skills, values and understanding that help students grow holistically, so they are ready to step out into the world with confidence and become amazing individuals!

Staff returned to Gilroy Catholic College yesterday to begin the new school year with purpose and energy. The day focused on setting our 2026 strategic goals and curriculum planning, and began with a reflection on our Catholic identity through the 2026 Mission SIP. Together, we explored how we can deepen students’ understanding of Scripture within the Catholic tradition — as a living text, continually interpreted and reinterpreted for the present day. The session concluded staff placing their intentions on the cross and praying together as a school community. A hopeful and energising start to the year ahead.
