Culture and career in focus at First Nations Students Forum

21 May 2024

First Nations Forum at St Columbas Springwood

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from throughout Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD) came together in the Blue Mountains for the inaugural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Senior Students Forum at St Columba's Catholic College Springwood.

Led by St Columba's staff and CSPD’s Jarara Cultural Centre, the event offered amazing opportunities for students to explore career pathways including CSPD’s Teacher Scholarship program, engage in cultural activities, meet other First Nations students and take part in an engaging student panel looking at education, employment and the cultural experiences of young people in Western Sydney.

“We work with over 80 schools and it's really hard to connect with them all,” said Lyndal Simmonds, Jarara Cultural Centre Leading Teacher. “So a day like this is an opportunity for us to meet those senior students who are looking for what's their next step. We wanted to connect with them culturally because there's not always a lot of opportunities for that, but also provide them with options and pathways and let them know what's out there beyond school.”

Forum speaker Taleisha Councillor

The keynote speaker was Taleisha Councillor from Jarara Cultural Centre. Taleisha is currently studying for a Bachelor of Primary Education at Australian Catholic University and is a graduate of St Clare's Catholic High School Hassall Grove.

Taleisha also joined a student panel discussion that included Cobie (graduate of Bede Polding College South Windsor) and Sophie (graduate of Nagle College Blacktown) who spoke about their experiences at school, what they are doing now, and their own journey connecting to culture.

One aim of the forum, held on Dharug and Gundungurra land, was to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to take control of their future. They got to meet representatives from a huge number of organisations including all of Sydney's major universities, TAFE, Registered Training Organisations (RTO), apprenticeship centres, private colleges, professional associations and employers in a variety of industries.

“Talking to these careers people and the university mob especially, it feels so good to really understand that there’s more than just ‘you have to do your ATAR,’ ‘you have to get this mark’. It's honestly like a whole new support system,” said Jewel Osborne, student at St Agnes Catholic High School Rooty Hill.

Throughout the day the students took part in dancing, weaving, painting, and yarning with mob. It was an opportunity to celebrate culture and focus on their education, career, and employment journeys beyond school.

“It's been amazing,” said Tataya Curry-Jones, St John Paul II Catholic College Schofields student. “I'm not the best dancer, but I feel so connected to my culture, learning these dances and listening to the songs as well. They all have a very special meaning and I think it's just amazing for students to come down and learn the dances.”

Local students were also excited to hear that the Blue Mountains Gazette, Western Weekender newspaper and National Indigenous Television (NITV) covered the event.

The forum is in its first year and expectations are that it will be bigger and better in 2025.

This morning, we had the pleasure of celebrating our Gilroy mothers and mother figures at our Mothers’ Day breakfast. It was heartwarming to see so many attend, and the sense of community and connection was felt. When welcoming those in attendance, Mrs Rodriguez quoted Dr Seuss "To the world, you may be one person, but to one person, you may be the world." This reminded us of the deep and lasting impact a mother has on her child—and the powerful love that flows in both directions. In her address, Ms Merryweather invited the community to reflect on the special bond we share with our mothers—those whose arms we long for in times of sadness or worry, and the first person we want to share our joys with. Whether they are with us in person or in spirit, they continue to grace our lives with their love. We hope everyone who joined us enjoyed connecting with fellow members of the Gilroy community and the delicious food shared together. Thank you to all of those, through their dedication and hard work, made this event a fabulous morning for all our mothers, staff and students

What an incredible day at the Western Sydney Secondary School Regional Tournament! 🏆 Gilroy Catholic College was proudly represented by four teams who gave it their all. The junior boys played with heart and showed fantastic sportsmanship, narrowly missing out on the finals. The intermediate boys went undefeated in their group stage and put in their best performance in the semi-final, falling just short against one of the top schools in the state. Both our junior and intermediate girls' teams made it to their grand finals. The inter girls fought hard in a close 3–2 loss, while the junior girls dominated with a brilliant 4–0 win! 💪 We’re thrilled to announce that both girls' teams have now qualified for the next stage of the tournament, where they’ll face off against the best schools from across NSW! Congratulations to all teams for their efforts!

Year 10 student Stella Powell recently took to the stage as part of the highly reviewed Sydney Youth Musical Theatre Production of "Billy Elliot The Musical" at the Glen Street Theatre. In the musical production, Stella portrays one of the lead characters "Keeley Gibson," with such nuance, conviction, humour and grace. Stella was cast as "Gomez Addams" in Gilroy's "The Addams Family" Musical last year, and we look forward to seeing Stella's name in lights in many more musical productions to come! Yesterday, Gilroy Catholic College Year 7 students attended a presentation by Daniel Merza. The overall theme of the presentation was how to "get the monkeys off your back" to overcome adversity, find purpose, and become the best version of themselves. Daniel's fun and interactive presentation provided practical ways to reduce unkindness and bullying behaviors, strategies for building resilience and what bystanders can do to stop bullying. We thank Daniel for his engaging presentation! #danielmerza #beatbullying

This morning Gilroy Catholic College came together for a beautiful reflection on hope and how it connects these three important moments—Easter, ANZAC Day, and the life of Pope Francis. Each of these themes offers a unique perspective on hope: Easter brings the ultimate hope, through the sacrifice and resurrection of Jesus, a promise of eternal life and redemption. ANZAC Day highlights the hope for freedom and peace, acknowledging the sacrifices made for the safety and well-being of future generations. Pope Francis embodied hope in action by giving of himself, advocating for the marginalized, and showing that through care and service, hope can be found in even the most difficult situations. It's a powerful reminder of how hope can inspire us to live lives of compassion, courage, and service, just as these figures and events have demonstrated. “Everyone knows what it is to hope. In the heart of each person, hope dwells as the desire and expectation of good things to come.” Pope Francis.
