Spotlight on a Scholarship Student #1 - Teacher in the making!

Teacher Scholarship Graduates
Courtney (far left) with some of her scholarship friends at the 2024 launch

With applications for the CSPD Teacher Scholarship Program now open, we thought it was the perfect time to check in with our 2024 scholarship recipients. Get to know some of our future teachers through our series of Q&A profiles over the coming weeks.

Courtney O’Reilly, Macquarie University, Bachelor of Secondary Education (RE & English)

Which schools (primary & secondary) did you attend?
I went to Mary Immaculate Primary Quakers Hill and then St John XXIII Stanhope Gardens for high school.

Why did you decide to study teaching?
People had always told me I would make a really good teacher, but it was having amazing English teachers in Year 11 & 12 that actually made the decision for me, because I wanted to inspire kids the same way those teachers inspired me.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about applying for a CSPD Teacher Scholarship?
Do it! My friends and I all applied without too many expectations because this was new at the time and we all got in. It has been nothing but helpful. I know we are all so grateful for this opportunity.

What has been the best thing about being part of the scholarship program?
The associate teacher opportunities have been incredible. We are able to support the teachers and work with students at schools alongside 3rd year prac students. I’ve been able to run masterclasses with kids, mark and give feedback to some students’ short answer questions, and been given so much insight into what teaching is really like in such a short amount of time. It has been amazing.

Have you had any practical teaching experiences or placements? If so, what do you enjoy most about working with students?
Yes, I have been lucky enough to get a job back at my old school, where I am getting heaps of exposure to teaching which has been awesome. I think what I enjoy most about the practical teaching experience so far is in the 10 weeks that I have been there, I can actually see students grow with certain content and skills which truly makes me feel so proud of them and excites me for the future.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of your studies?
Hanging out with friends, working and binge watching Wentworth!

What is your favourite memory from your own school experience?
Pilates with my favourite teacher before one of my practice exams to “destress”. Honestly it was the most fun and random experience ever!

Being inclusive and welcoming goes to the heart of what the Gilroy Catholic College community is all about so it's nice to reflect on how much our students enjoyed learning about human dignity, diversity and bias through the Interfaith Dialogue Program. In Module 2, they took part in a special workshop to better understand the difference and similarities in faith, the influence of bias and stereotypes and identifying the building blocks of harmony. We look forward to sharing more of our students’ inspiring interfaith journey! #gilroyvalues #catholicmission

Recently the Open Girls Soccer team competed at the PDSSSC gala day. The girls did not concede a goal in both the regular rounds or semi finals. They have now gained a spot in the grand final to hopefully represent the Parramatta Diocese at NSWCCC. Well done to Mr Mason for his great coaching skills and congratulations to Taylor, Rachel & Juliana who have also made the selection trials for the Parramatta Diocese team!

Yr 9 ‘Mind, Body Spirit’ Market Gilroy Catholic College Year 9 students have been learning about mental health, with a focus on understanding how stress can affect people in different occupations. As part of this engaging learning experience, students investigated the types of stress that may be experienced in a variety of careers. They then designed and presented interactive information stalls, inviting students from other year groups to visit and learn more about occupational stress and workplace wellbeing. It was wonderful to see our students sharing their knowledge, building empathy, and helping raise awareness of mental health in such a meaningful and creative way. Well done, Year 9!

In Catholic belief, beginning with Easter Monday, Jesus Christ continues to appear to his disciples after His resurrection on Easter Sunday. Over the next 40 days, He strengthens their faith, teaches them, and prepares them for their mission. At the end of this period, He bodily ascends into heaven known as the "Ascension of Jesus".

On this Holy Thursday, we are drawn into a quiet, powerful moment—one that turns our expectations upside down. Jesus, Teacher and Lord, kneels before his disciples and washes their feet. In this simple yet profound act, he shows us what love truly looks like: not power or recognition, but humility and service. It is not always easy to follow this example. We may prefer to lead rather than serve, to be noticed rather than to quietly care for others. Yet Jesus invites us into something deeper—to love through action, to serve without hesitation, and to give of ourselves with open hearts. As Mrs Merryweather reflected in her address, we are challenged to ask: whose feet are we being called to wash today? It may not be in a literal sense, but in the small, everyday acts of kindness, patience, and compassion we offer to others. May this Holy Thursday stir within us a willingness to serve. May our hands be ready to help, our hearts open to love, and our lives shaped by humility. And in following His example, may we become living signs of that same self-giving love in the world. Wishing all our families a happy and blessed Easter. Thank you to students Lachlan, Hugo, Christopher and Mia-Lore for taking photos for us to share with our College community!
