With applications for the CSPD Teacher Scholarship Program now open, we thought it was the perfect time to check in with our 2024 scholarship recipients. Get to know some of our future teachers through our series of Q&A profiles over the coming weeks.
Courtney O’Reilly, Macquarie University, Bachelor of Secondary Education (RE & English)
Which schools (primary & secondary) did you attend?
I went to Mary Immaculate Primary Quakers Hill and then St John XXIII Stanhope Gardens for high school.
Why did you decide to study teaching?
People had always told me I would make a really good teacher, but it was having amazing English teachers in Year 11 & 12 that actually made the decision for me, because I wanted to inspire kids the same way those teachers inspired me.
What advice would you give to students who are thinking about applying for a CSPD Teacher Scholarship?
Do it! My friends and I all applied without too many expectations because this was new at the time and we all got in. It has been nothing but helpful. I know we are all so grateful for this opportunity.
What has been the best thing about being part of the scholarship program?
The associate teacher opportunities have been incredible. We are able to support the teachers and work with students at schools alongside 3rd year prac students. I’ve been able to run masterclasses with kids, mark and give feedback to some students’ short answer questions, and been given so much insight into what teaching is really like in such a short amount of time. It has been amazing.

Have you had any practical teaching experiences or placements? If so, what do you enjoy most about working with students?
Yes, I have been lucky enough to get a job back at my old school, where I am getting heaps of exposure to teaching which has been awesome. I think what I enjoy most about the practical teaching experience so far is in the 10 weeks that I have been there, I can actually see students grow with certain content and skills which truly makes me feel so proud of them and excites me for the future.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of your studies?
Hanging out with friends, working and binge watching Wentworth!
What is your favourite memory from your own school experience?
Pilates with my favourite teacher before one of my practice exams to “destress”. Honestly it was the most fun and random experience ever!

A Remarkable Achievement – Celebrating Our Published Author! We are incredibly proud to celebrate the success of Year 12 student Anmol, who has achieved the extraordinary milestone of becoming a published author! At just 18 years of age, Anmol has turned his personal experiences, reflections and insights into The Hope in Life, an uplifting self-help book written over three years. Through its pages, he explores the challenges of growing up, the power of resilience and the importance of embracing life's journey with courage and positivity. Adding even greater meaning to this achievement, Anmol intends to donate a portion of the book's profits to Cerebral Palsy Alliance, helping to make a positive difference in the lives of others. PDSSSC TENNIS GALA DAY Gilroy Catholic College was proudly represented at the recent PDSSSC Tennis Gala Day, with four teams competing – two boys’ and two girls’ teams – the largest number of teams entered by any school in the Diocese! Throughout the tournament, our students demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm, resilience and determination, rising to the challenge against some tough competition. A special congratulations to our Boys 1.1 team – Manu, Pramath, Louis and Nass – who delivered an impressive performance to reach the Grand Final! In a nail-biting finish, the boys narrowly missed out on the championship following a thrilling countback. INTRODUCING OUR NEW HOUSE MASCOTS! We are excited to unveil Gilroy Catholic College’s brand-new House Mascots! Inspired by the creativity of Year 7 student Grace, whose design was selected as the winning entry in our Term 3 House Mascot Competition, these mascots bring a fresh and exciting identity to our four College Houses. Each mascot proudly reflects the animal associated with its House name, with its own unique personality and character. We look forward to seeing our new mascots come to life as they become part of our House spirit and traditions from Term 1, 2027!

National Champion! The Australian Gymnastics Championships were held in Sydney, and what an incredible achievement for Gilroy Catholic College Year 10 student Ashton! Ashton claimed Individual Gold on Trampoline, earning the title of Under 17 Australian National Champion. He was also selected to represent NSW in the team events, where the team delivered outstanding performances: Gold – Trampoline Team Bronze – Double Mini Team Congratulations to Ashton on his outstanding success!

Congratulations to Penny (Year 7), Evie (Year 9) and Bonnie (Year 9), who proudly represented Australia at the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in Phoenix, Arizona. Competing against elite dancers from more than 50 countries, their Sploove JV Megacrew placed an outstanding 6th in the world. Penny’s Junior Crew, Sploovers, also achieved an incredible 9th place in their first year together. A fantastic result reflecting months of dedication and hard work. Well done, Penny, Evie and Bonnie!

Service, compassion and generosity were put into action on Monday as students from our Mary MacKillop FIAT Awards Program spent the day volunteering at Foodbank. Working together in the warehouse, our students helped prepare more than 1,260 Christmas hampers for individuals and families experiencing financial hardship. Their efforts saw an extraordinary 17,388 kg of food packed — the equivalent of 31,298 meals for people in need. Our ongoing partnership with Foodbank, which began in 2024, continues to make a remarkable impact. Since then, Gilroy students have helped pack an incredible 129,181 kg of food, equivalent to 232,526 meals. We are incredibly proud of the way our students embraced the opportunity to serve others with enthusiasm, compassion and generosity.
