Spotlight on a Scholarship Student #1 - Teacher in the making!

26 Jul 2024

Teacher Scholarship Graduates
Courtney (far left) with some of her scholarship friends at the 2024 launch

With applications for the CSPD Teacher Scholarship Program now open, we thought it was the perfect time to check in with our 2024 scholarship recipients. Get to know some of our future teachers through our series of Q&A profiles over the coming weeks.

Courtney O’Reilly, Macquarie University, Bachelor of Secondary Education (RE & English)

Which schools (primary & secondary) did you attend?
I went to Mary Immaculate Primary Quakers Hill and then St John XXIII Stanhope Gardens for high school.

Why did you decide to study teaching?
People had always told me I would make a really good teacher, but it was having amazing English teachers in Year 11 & 12 that actually made the decision for me, because I wanted to inspire kids the same way those teachers inspired me.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about applying for a CSPD Teacher Scholarship?
Do it! My friends and I all applied without too many expectations because this was new at the time and we all got in. It has been nothing but helpful. I know we are all so grateful for this opportunity.

What has been the best thing about being part of the scholarship program?
The associate teacher opportunities have been incredible. We are able to support the teachers and work with students at schools alongside 3rd year prac students. I’ve been able to run masterclasses with kids, mark and give feedback to some students’ short answer questions, and been given so much insight into what teaching is really like in such a short amount of time. It has been amazing.

Have you had any practical teaching experiences or placements? If so, what do you enjoy most about working with students?
Yes, I have been lucky enough to get a job back at my old school, where I am getting heaps of exposure to teaching which has been awesome. I think what I enjoy most about the practical teaching experience so far is in the 10 weeks that I have been there, I can actually see students grow with certain content and skills which truly makes me feel so proud of them and excites me for the future.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of your studies?
Hanging out with friends, working and binge watching Wentworth!

What is your favourite memory from your own school experience?
Pilates with my favourite teacher before one of my practice exams to “destress”. Honestly it was the most fun and random experience ever!

Inspiration in the heart of Sydney! Recently, Gilroy Catholic College Year 11 and 12 Elective Music students attended the Encore concert at the Sydney Opera House. This special event highlights some of the most outstanding HSC Music performances and compositions from students across NSW. Experiencing these exceptional works in such an iconic venue was both inspiring and motivating for our students. It offered a valuable insight into the dedication, creativity and hard work that goes into achieving excellence in music. A fantastic opportunity for our young musicians to learn, reflect and be inspired! #GilroyCatholicCollege #Encore #SydneyOperaHouse #HSCMusic #MusicEducation

On Wednesday evening, Gilroy Catholic College warmly welcomed families, friends and prospective students as the College opened its doors to the wider community for a vibrant and engaging Opening Evening. Throughout the evening, future students explored the campus and experienced the dynamic learning environment at Gilroy, participating in a variety of interactive games, activities, hands-on science experiments and ball games on our new basketball courts. The enthusiasm and excitement from visiting families created a wonderful atmosphere across the College. The success of the evening was made possible through the dedicated organisation of our staff and the generous support of our students, who volunteered their time to welcome families and share their experiences of life at Gilroy. Visitors enjoyed music performances, delicious cupcakes prepared by our Hospitality students, and reflections by our College Principal, student leaders and even two of our brand new Year 7 students! Events such as this highlight the strong sense of community and opportunity that defines Gilroy Catholic College. We look forward to welcoming future students and families to our College community in 2027 and beyond. A reminder that the final date for receipt of enrolment applications to be considered for first round offers will be Friday 27 March. First round letters of offer will be sent during the week beginning 25 May 2026.

During a recent Year 7 Pastoral lesson, Year 7 students were invited to write a personal letter addressed to their future Year 12 graduating selves. In these letters, students were asked to reflect on their current interests and experiences, as well as their hopes, dreams, and aspirations for the future. These letters will be carefully stored, and will be returned them to students upon their Year 12 graduation. This is a meaningful and memorable experience for the students and they embraced it with enthusiasm and enjoyment! The opportunity was also offered to our Year 7 families to contribute a letter, message, inspirational quote, humorous note, or anecdote to be shared at the Year 12 graduation ceremony. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you Class of 2031!

Last week the Gilroy Catholic College Leaders attended the 2026 Lifted Leaders Day. Billie, our College Captain reflected: “The Lifted Leaders Day was a great opportunity for student leaders from different schools to come together and learn more about leadership. We participated in a range of activities that build teamwork and communication skills, and listened to inspiring community leaders who shared their experiences and advice. The day helped us reflect on how we can grow as leaders and make a positive impact in our community.” We look forward to seeing our leaders continue to grow within our College community, putting into action the skills and insights they gained, and embracing every opportunity to lead with courage, compassion and service.

In the first module of the 2026 Interfaith Dialogue Program, Gilroy Catholic College students gathered for an introduction to a journey of learning, encounter, and shared understanding. Facilitated by Catholic Mission, the Interfaith Dialogue Program promotes cooperative and respectful engagement among people of different religions, faiths, and spiritual traditions. The program seeks to foster mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration, with the broader goal of encouraging peace and tolerance within our diverse society. Through open dialogue, thoughtful questions, and shared experiences, students developed deeper insights into one another’s values and traditions—laying the foundation for lasting interfaith friendships and contributing to a more harmonious and inclusive future. Stay tuned as we follow our students on their inspiring interfaith journey! #gilroyvalues #catholicmission
