Spotlight on a Scholarship Student #1 - Teacher in the making!

26 Jul 2024

Teacher Scholarship Graduates
Courtney (far left) with some of her scholarship friends at the 2024 launch

With applications for the CSPD Teacher Scholarship Program now open, we thought it was the perfect time to check in with our 2024 scholarship recipients. Get to know some of our future teachers through our series of Q&A profiles over the coming weeks.

Courtney O’Reilly, Macquarie University, Bachelor of Secondary Education (RE & English)

Which schools (primary & secondary) did you attend?
I went to Mary Immaculate Primary Quakers Hill and then St John XXIII Stanhope Gardens for high school.

Why did you decide to study teaching?
People had always told me I would make a really good teacher, but it was having amazing English teachers in Year 11 & 12 that actually made the decision for me, because I wanted to inspire kids the same way those teachers inspired me.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about applying for a CSPD Teacher Scholarship?
Do it! My friends and I all applied without too many expectations because this was new at the time and we all got in. It has been nothing but helpful. I know we are all so grateful for this opportunity.

What has been the best thing about being part of the scholarship program?
The associate teacher opportunities have been incredible. We are able to support the teachers and work with students at schools alongside 3rd year prac students. I’ve been able to run masterclasses with kids, mark and give feedback to some students’ short answer questions, and been given so much insight into what teaching is really like in such a short amount of time. It has been amazing.

Have you had any practical teaching experiences or placements? If so, what do you enjoy most about working with students?
Yes, I have been lucky enough to get a job back at my old school, where I am getting heaps of exposure to teaching which has been awesome. I think what I enjoy most about the practical teaching experience so far is in the 10 weeks that I have been there, I can actually see students grow with certain content and skills which truly makes me feel so proud of them and excites me for the future.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time outside of your studies?
Hanging out with friends, working and binge watching Wentworth!

What is your favourite memory from your own school experience?
Pilates with my favourite teacher before one of my practice exams to “destress”. Honestly it was the most fun and random experience ever!

Gilroy Catholic College proudly acknowledges and congratulates our 2026 cohort who have successfully completed the Step Up Into Teaching program in partnership with Australian Catholic University (ACU), graduating last week. As part of this outstanding initiative, six of our Year 12 students completed two advanced university subjects toward a Bachelor of Teaching during their school holiday periods across Years 11 and 12. This remarkable achievement has earned them a conditional early entry offer into a teaching degree of their choice at ACU. The program demands dedication, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to collaboration, while also providing valuable insight into university life and the expectations of tertiary study. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and look forward to supporting these students as they take their next steps toward joining the inspiring and rewarding teaching profession.

Day 3 of Year 7 Camp Year 7 arrived back from camp weary but happy! After days filled with adventure, laughter, and new experiences, it’s safe to say memories were made that will last a lifetime. Gilroy Catholic College Year 11 and 12 Visual Arts students recently attended an excursion to the Art Gallery of NSW, where they explored the ARTEXPRESS 2026 exhibition. This showcase features a curated selection of outstanding bodies of work developed for the art-making component of the 2025 HSC Visual Arts examination. During their visit, students were also fortunate to experience a tour of the Ron Mueck sculptural exhibition. Mueck’s work demonstrates an extraordinary command of sculptural and painting techniques, capturing human and animal forms with remarkable precision and lifelike detail. His pieces depict both ordinary and extraordinary moments, with a strong emphasis on body language and emotional expression.

From group activities to paddle boarding on the water, students had an amazing time connecting, laughing, and supporting one another along the way. It’s been fantastic to see friendships grow and confidence shine as everyone steps outside their comfort zone and gives things a go. So many smiles and great moments shared!

Harmony Week 16-20 March Last week, Gilroy Catholic College proudly celebrated Harmony Week — a special time to recognise and embrace the rich diversity within our community. Throughout the week, staff and students shared prayers in a variety of languages, including Gaelic, Italian, Japanese, German, Arabic, French, and Polish, reflecting the many cultures that make our College so unique. Our bell times were filled with music from around the world, creating moments of connection, discovery, and appreciation across cultures. On Friday, we came together to celebrate Harmony Day, with staff and students wearing orange in support of diversity and inclusion. This year’s theme, “Everyone Belongs,” was truly brought to life across our College. A wonderful celebration of unity, respect, and belonging! #HarmonyWeek #EveryoneBelongs

Yesterday, Gilroy Catholic College’s Year 12 Hospitality students hosted their Café event for staff, preparing and serving a wonderful selection of food and beverages. The dishes looked incredible and staff were even treated to refreshing “nohitos”! The students did a fantastic job and demonstrated impressive professionalism throughout the event. Staff thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to sit back and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared and served by our talented students. By all reports, the food looked amazing and tasted just as good! Congratulations to our Year 12 Hospitality students on a very successful Café event!

Last week, students from Gilroy Catholic College took part in the 2026 Big Water Walk, an initiative by Caritas Australia during the Lenten season. Through this powerful experience, our students walked in solidarity with communities around the world who must travel long distances every day to access clean water – a basic human right that many still live without. As we continue our Lenten journey, our participation in Project Compassion reminds us that faith is lived through action. Together, we are called to show compassion, promote justice and support those in need.
