Transitioning smoothly into ‘big school’: What parents need to know

12 Jan 2026

The first day of Kindergarten!

It’s a milestone filled with excitement, pride and maybe a few nerves (for both you and your child!). Starting “big school” marks the beginning of a whole new adventure, and with a little preparation, you can help make those first weeks calm, confident and full of smiles.

1. Talk it up with excitement!
Children take their cues from you. Speak positively about school, the friends they’ll make, the fun activities and the stories they’ll hear. This helps build excitement rather than anxiety. If you’re feeling nervous, that’s normal too, just try to keep the focus on the positives!

2. Practise the little things
In the lead-up to school, have a few “practice mornings.” Pack the school bag, try on the uniform and walk or drive past the school together. Familiarity makes everything feel a little less overwhelming when the big day arrives.

3. Create a calm morning routine
Have a predictable morning - breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth, bag in hand. This helps children feel secure. Try it out before term starts so it becomes second nature. And remember: even if the first morning feels like a blur, a hug, a smile and a confident goodbye go a long way.

4. Expect tiredness (and big emotions)
Starting school is exciting and exhausting! Don’t be surprised if your child is extra tired or emotional in those first few weeks. Keep afternoons simple, with plenty of rest, snacks and downtime.

5. Stay connected
Ask open-ended questions like “What was the best thing you did today?” rather than “What did you learn?” And remember, every child settles in at their own pace. If you have any concerns, your child’s teacher is there to help.

Starting school is a big step, but it’s also the start of something wonderful - new friends, new skills and new adventures. At our Catholic schools, we’re here to partner with you in nurturing your child’s learning, faith and wellbeing from the very beginning.

Last week the Gilroy Catholic College Leaders attended the 2026 Lifted Leaders Day. Billie, our College Captain reflected: “The Lifted Leaders Day was a great opportunity for student leaders from different schools to come together and learn more about leadership. We participated in a range of activities that build teamwork and communication skills, and listened to inspiring community leaders who shared their experiences and advice. The day helped us reflect on how we can grow as leaders and make a positive impact in our community.” We look forward to seeing our leaders continue to grow within our College community, putting into action the skills and insights they gained, and embracing every opportunity to lead with courage, compassion and service.

In the first module of the 2026 Interfaith Dialogue Program, Gilroy Catholic College students gathered for an introduction to a journey of learning, encounter, and shared understanding. Facilitated by Catholic Mission, the Interfaith Dialogue Program promotes cooperative and respectful engagement among people of different religions, faiths, and spiritual traditions. The program seeks to foster mutual understanding, respect, and collaboration, with the broader goal of encouraging peace and tolerance within our diverse society. Through open dialogue, thoughtful questions, and shared experiences, students developed deeper insights into one another’s values and traditions—laying the foundation for lasting interfaith friendships and contributing to a more harmonious and inclusive future. Stay tuned as we follow our students on their inspiring interfaith journey! #gilroyvalues #catholicmission

Recently, students from Gilroy Catholic College took part in a volunteer Mission Day at Foodbank Australia. The group, made up of students from the Mary MacKillop FIAT Awards Program, rolled up their sleeves in the warehouse to pack orders supporting regional community partners who provide essential assistance to people experiencing financial hardship. Together, the students packed an incredible 14,402kg of food — the equivalent of 25,924 meals — for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Since the beginning of our partnership with Foodbank in 2024, Gilroy students have packed an outstanding 82,825kg of food, translating to an extraordinary 149,084 meals provided to those in need. We are incredibly proud of our students’ commitment, energy and generosity as they continue to live out the Gilroy values through service and compassion. #marymackillopFIATawards #gilroyvalues #CSPD

As part of Wellbeing Week, on Friday 20 February, the College was delighted to welcome Delta Therapy Dogs to support our students’ personal wellbeing. Interacting with therapy dogs can help reduce stress and anxiety, lift mood, encourage social connection, and provide a calming break from daily pressures. Students were thrilled to meet Cody, Honey, Remy, Lilli and Buddy —all absolutely adorable and completely professional! Their gentle presence and affectionate nature brought smiles, laughter, and a wonderful sense of calm across the campus. We asked students what they like most about dogs, and the message was the same—dogs don’t judge, they love you no matter what, and they’re always happy to see you. It was clear the visit had a meaningful impact. These incredible dogs quickly found their way into the hearts of our students, offering comfort and a welcome pause from the rigours of school life. #mydeltadog #deltatherapydogs #pawsthepressure

Our College Leaders brought incredible energy to Wellbeing Week on Thursday, hosting a fantastic lineup of recess activities — from Volleyball to Musical Chairs! Students jumped in with enthusiasm, but it was Musical Chairs that stole the spotlight as the clear favourite! The music was pumping, the competition was fierce, and the reactions when the music stopped were absolutely priceless! A huge shoutout to our amazing College Leaders for bringing the fun, laughter, and positive vibes throughout Wellbeing Week. Your leadership and spirit have made it a week to remember!
