Bishop of Parramatta recognises student excellence

06 Sep 2024

Group shot of Bishop and recipients of Bishop of Parramatta Award for Student Excellence

Each year, one Year 12 student in every Catholic secondary school in the Diocese of Parramatta is awarded the Bishop of Parramatta Award for Student Excellence.

This prestigious award is nominated by the school principal and recognises a student’s witness to their Catholic faith and outstanding contribution to the school community in areas such as academic excellence, sporting achievement, creative and performing arts, social justice, vocational education and community involvement.

This year’s outstanding students were recognised by Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv at an event held at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Thursday 5 September, attended by more than 300 people, including parents, school representatives and local community leaders. Each award recipient was acknowledged with a medallion and certificate.

Bishop Vincent delivered a powerful reflection on excellence and the aims of Catholic education. He praised the award recipients for their hard work, discipline, dedication and commitment.

“The honour we bestow on them tonight recognises not only what they have done but also the positive attitude with which they have imbued their environments and relationships. These students have let the light of Christ shine through them. They have worked hard, with a sense of responsibility and commitment,” said Bishop Vincent.

Day in the Life of a Plumbing Apprentice Recently, some of our Year 10 students took part in the Day in the Life of Plumbing program at the Kingswood TAFE Institute of Applied Technology - an amazing real-world learning facility. Students threw themselves into every challenge: replacing tap fittings, bending pipes, fitting guttering, soldering, and even operating a scissor lift! They also worked in teams to install a stormwater drain - a task that even first-year apprentices find tough - and our teams finished first and second on the day. All the boys represented our school brilliantly, but a special shout-out to Zac for his outstanding leadership and determination during the stormwater drain challenge. Thank you to the team at Kingswood TAFE and the REIP team for hosting us on the day and providing this amazing hands-on taster experience. #TAFE #cspd

When night falls and the last student leaves, the school changes. The playgrounds that once rang with laughter and hurried footsteps grow silent. Classrooms, so full of movement and noise just hours ago, become still—only the faint hum of the lights or the ticking of a clock breaks the quiet. Yet, in that stillness, the spirit of the day remains. The air seems to remember the curiosity, the friendships, the small victories and lessons learned. Each desk holds a trace of thought, each chair a story paused but not ended. The school at night feels like it is dreaming—resting, but alive with the energy of all it has seen. It waits patiently for morning, when the doors will open again and the quiet will burst into life once more. In its silence, there is hope: a reminder that learning never truly ends; it simply rests until the world is ready to begin again. #cspd

Our Faith in Action students proudly represented Gilroy Catholic College at this year’s Socktober Gala Day, competing alongside Nagle College, St Columba’s, and Parramatta Marist. Organisers and staff from other schools offered unanimous praise: our young people carried themselves with exceptional pride, maturity, and respect. On the field, they played with heart, supported one another, and brought genuine joy to the day. Congratulations to these students for the spirit, teamwork, and character they displayed throughout the event.

Members of the Gilroy Catholic College Choir, together with students from St Bernadette’s Primary School, recently visited BUPA Dural Aged Care and MacKillop House Catholic Healthcare Norwest to spread some Christmas cheer. The students delighted residents by singing Christmas carols, bringing joy and festive spirit to all. This visit has become a much-loved annual tradition for our Choir ensemble and is an event they eagerly look forward to each year. It is wonderful to see our students sharing their talents and living out their Catholic ministry within the wider community. #cspd #Bupa
