Good Friday Walk an Amazing Feat of Faith

27 May 2025

Good Friday Walk. Students are outside St Patrick's Cathedral, Parramatta

More than 1,400 Catholic students and young people from Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains came together in faith to participate in the annual Good Friday walk, a 21-kilometre pilgrimage from Blacktown to Parramatta.

Organised by Catholic Youth Parramatta and the Diocese of Parramatta, walkers set off from St Patrick’s Church, Blacktown at 10:00pm on Good Friday and arrived at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Parramatta at around 6:00am on Easter Saturday.

Represented were students and staff from across Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese (CSPD), including Bede Polding College South Windsor, Caroline Chisholm College Glenmore Park, Catherine McAuley Westmead, CathWest Innovation College Mount Druitt, Delany College Granville, Emmaus Catholic College Kemps Creek, Nagle College Blacktown, Parramatta Marist High School, Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown, and St Agnes Catholic High School Rooty Hill.

The event is a powerful demonstration of faith with every step taken by young people in remembrance of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ over 2,000 years ago.

The walk was much more than a physical challenge, it was a deeply spiritual journey with each stage of the night bringing unique moments of reflection.

“The highlight for me was when I walked alone. It gave me quiet time to pray and listen to worship music,” said Irena, also from Nagle College.

Pilgrims make regular prayer and reflection stops at parishes in Seven Hills, Toongabbie, Wentworthville and Merrylands.

“Seeing the elevated cross at the forefront of our group reminded me why we were walking. It helped me push through,” reflected Seanna, a student from Bede Polding College.

Seeing the Stations of the Cross at each church, acted by the youth of that church, was also beautiful and eye-opening.

Praying with the pilgrims at their departure point in Blacktown, Bishop Vincent wished them well and was “astounded” at the number of young people before him.

James Camden, Director of Catholic Youth Parramatta said the pilgrimage attracts a large number of youth, despite the various challenges faced by the Church today.

“I was surprised by the number of young people who took part in the walk when I first started. At a time when the general public feels that young people are walking away from the Church we have these young people that are standing up for what they believe in and expressing what their faith means to them,” Mr Camden said. “In a really positive sign, around 60% of the participants were aged between 15-22.”

Many students commented on how the experience deepened their faith, forged friendships, and fostered connection.

“Out of this experience I gained more understanding in my faith and trust in God as I dedicated Good Friday as a sacrifice and reflection of walking as Jesus did on the way to the cross,” shared Athalie.

I also became closer to the people I was around during the night and am now looking forward to joining this walk every year!

“From the experience, I gained a stronger sense of community and spiritual endurance,” added Irene, from Nagle College. “It reminded me of the importance of faith, connection, and resilience. This experience brought everyone together in a powerful way, and I bonded with individuals whom I don't usually talk to.”

The entire walk has the support of other agencies and ministries in the Diocese of Parramatta as well as the NSW Police Force who said it was “a smooth, well run and safe event.”

As part of our Catholic Identity and Mission, which highlights the importance of community and community involvement, today Gilroy Catholic College students were invited to wear a blue (or maroon) item to show support for their team and state in the upcoming State of Origin. Students proudly displayed their colours, with one small group of students bravely wearing Maroon among a large sea of blue! The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference explains how sport is a gift which can draw people closer to Christ: “The connection between sport and faith in Australia has been more visible in recent times, with elite athletes seen praying on the field and others speaking openly about their faith,” the document says. With so many involved in sport around the country, there is a wonderful opportunity for people of faith to contribute to this renewal by exemplifying the virtues sport can foster, and in doing so, witnessing to the Gospel and opening the way to Christ.

Recently, Gilroy Catholic College class leaders from Years 7-10 attended the Lifted Rise and Lifted Unleashed events, which provided an opportunity for music, testimony, and discussion. The days were filled with faith, fun, and fellowship with students from all over the diocese. The theme of Hope was brought to life during uplifting music, inspiring words, deep discussions and engaging workshops. Our students left with a renewed sense of purpose and a commitment to spreading hope in their own communities! A reflection from Year 7 student Yuna: “The Student Leaders from Year 7 and 8 went to an event called “Lifted” where we discussed God and hope. We got to connect with various high schools such as Catherine McCauley, Marian, Emmaus and St John the XXIII. Every student was engaging and friendly, making the experience extremely enjoyable. We sang songs with a band and praised the Lord and participated in different workshops having conversations with other peers. This excursion was absolutely entertaining and everyone had a great time.”

May the Ascension remind us that while Christ has ascended, His presence remains with us through the Holy Spirit. Let it stir in us a deeper faith, a steadfast hope, and a renewed sense of purpose—to live as witnesses of His love in our daily lives.

Our Years 8 and 9 Food Technology classes had the special honour of being the first students to use the brand-new kitchen facilities in D Block last week — and the feedback has been fantastic! Students were thrilled with the modern appliances, spacious layout, and overall functionality of the new kitchens. The upgraded space has already enhanced their cooking experience and sparked creativity. We can’t wait to see the wonderful culinary creations that will continue to come out of our state-of-the-art kitchen spaces!

For over 40 years, Gilroy Catholic College has proudly supported the St Vincent de Paul Society. In the past five years, our commitment has grown through our involvement with the Vinnies Van program. The Vinnies Van is a vital outreach initiative run by St Vincent de Paul, providing support to people experiencing homelessness across Western Sydney. Operating seven nights a week (excluding New Year’s Eve), the Van offers food, companionship, and care directly to those in need. Each Thursday at recess, students involved in the Mary MacKillop Service Awards Program prepare sandwiches which are then delivered to Vinnies to be distributed during the evening Vinnies Van service. To further support this initiative, we invite our families to contribute snack packs, which are handed out alongside the meals. Each Homeroom is asked to contribute just once a year, helping to ensure a consistent supply throughout the school calendar. The snack packs are collected each Thursday morning by our student leaders and delivered with the sandwiches. Once a month on a Tuesday evening, students and staff from Gilroy Catholic College volunteer their time to serve the sandwiches and snack packs, along with a hot drink and a chat, from the Vinnies Van. We are truly blessed to be able to serve the most vulnerable members of our community. Thank you to our students, staff, and families for your continued generosity and support.

On Monday this week, the first day of National Volunteering Week, students from Gilroy Catholic College took part in a volunteer mission day at Foodbank, selected through the Mary MacKillop Service Awards Program and our Active Volunteering course. The students gained meaningful hands-on experience by packing orders in the warehouse to support regional community partners helping those facing financial hardship. Together, they packed an impressive 10,623kg of food for vulnerable individuals, which is equivalent to 19,122 meals! We are extremely proud of their dedication, enthusiasm, and commitment to serving others.

The Gilroy Catholic College Chess Competition is well and truly underway! There are 24 students competing, divided into the Junior (Years 7 and 8) and Senior divisions (Years 9 to 11). The competition runs until Week 8 and is based on a points system. The students with the most points will play in the semi finals in Week 9, the winners of those matches will play in the grand final in Week 10. It is wonderful to witness the enthusiasm of the students and the respect they show each other as they play their weekly games. They are a talented group of students!

This week, Gilroy Catholic College had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Michael Basan from SEDA and Maddison Phillips, a 2024 Gilroy graduate, to speak with our students about SEDA’s exciting dual credential diploma program in Business and Sport. With strong links to high-profile industry partners, the SEDA program allows students to gain real-world experience while completing nationally recognised VET qualifications. Michael shared valuable insights into the program, while Maddison spoke about how SEDA has supported her journey after school. It was especially inspiring for our students to hear from a recent Gilroy graduate now thriving in a dynamic, hands-on learning environment. Thank you to Michael, Maddison, and the SEDA team for giving our students a glimpse into this unique post-school pathway! #GilroyCatholicCollege #SEDA #Pathways #SportAndBusiness #GilroyAlumn
